Biomass

Biomass

Biomass is a collective term for plant and animal material that can be used as a raw material or energy source for power plants, for example.

Examples include wood/wood chips, pruning waste, waste from the food industry, animal manure or oil from seeds. Biomass also comes from the recycling industry. The latter is mainly wood in various qualities.

Around the world, more and more of the energy needs are supplied by biomass conversion. However, processing biomass has the disadvantage of releasing dust in the process. Prolonged or repeated exposure to fine dust from biomass has an effect on employees' health: studies have shown that biomass dust is carcinogenic to humans. This dust does not just settle where it is created. Dust can travel for miles thanks to the wind, thereby polluting the immediate environment.
